Congo is a socialist republic in Central Africa. It was first formed in the 1960s after the former colony of the Belgian Congo fought a war of independence, and has since expanded to encompass the territories of several other former European colonies in Central Africa.
As a major stronghold for the Third Communist International in the heart of the African continent, Congo has frequently come into conflict with capitalist powers in the region, most notably nearby Nigeria, which it fought a prolonged bloody war with during the 1980s.
